Prof. Tsisana Shamlikashvili – President of the National Organization of Mediators (NOM), academic chair of the Federal Institute of Mediation, founder of the Scientific and Methodological Center for Mediation and Law, Chair of the Subcommittee on ADR and Mediation in the Russian Association of Lawyers, founder, publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine “Mediation and Law”, professor, head of Mediation Master’s Program at MSUPE.
Tsisana Shamlikashvili is an International expert in ADR, international mediator, lawyer, neurologist (academic degrees of MD, PhD) and psychologist. Professor of the Moscow State University of Psychology and Education, holder of the chair “Mediation in social practices”; academic and scientific supervisor of the Center for Mediation and ADR in legal practice of the Moscow State Academy of Law. Her major research topic is the ways how society can influence the personality forming and development, implementation of ADR in business environment. In 2006 due to her initiative Mediation Service was established by Russian Union for Industrials and Entrepreneurs. Since the end of 1990’s Prof. Shamlikashvili devoted herself to the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution, mediation in particular, and its social importance.
Tsisana Shamlikashvili is a pioneer of ADR and one of the central figures, who initiated and supported institutionalization of mediation in Russia. In 2005 she founded Center for Mediation and Law, which during the following years became the main force in the efforts to build necessary conditions for successful implementation of mediation in the Russian Federation.
Since 2004 Prof. Shamlikashvili studied mediation in the United States, Germany, Austria and Great Britain. Tsisana Shamlikashvili is a graduate of several Harvard Negotiation Program courses (including Frank Sanders’ Mediation Course), certified mediator in Water Diplomacy matters (joint program of MIT and Tufts University).
Prof. Shamlikashvili is CEDR accredited mediator, mediator of JAMS International (USA-UK), Member of Association for Integrated Mediation, Board member of EMNI, Member of European Advisory Board of CPR, Council Member of Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine University (USA), Associate Board Member of GEMME (Europe), Board Member of AAPMAD (Association of Academics for the Promotion of Mediation as Academic Discipline), Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators, Corporate member and expert for Dispute Board Federation (DBF).
Prof. Shamlikashvili is a practicing mediator/neutral in a wide range of cases from complicated cross-border commercial disputes to family conflicts, as well as intellectual property, workplace, financial, personal injury and medical malpractice disputes.
Prof. Shamlikashvili has developed “mediation approach” facilitating use of main mediation principles in everyday life, “School mediation” method and educational program for children, students and maladjusted youths (to be integrated in Juvenile and Restorative Justice systems), training programs for professional mediators approved by Ministries of Education and Justice of the Russian Federation. Prof. Shamlikashvili is the author of the University Master’s Program “Mediation in Social Practices”, which is the first of its kind in Russia. Under Prof. Shamlikashvili’s leadership Center for Mediation and Law has established practice of introductory courses on ADR and Mediation in Russian Universities and Law Schools like Moscow State University, Russian School of Private Law etc., has developed Multilevel Complex Integrated Mediation Approach (MCIAM) for corporations and supports courts in different regions of Russia to establish Mediation Referral Programs etc.
Prof. Shamlikashvili is the President of the National Organization of Mediators (NOM, Russia), serving to create a system of self-regulation for mediation practice in Russia. Scientific and Methodological Centre for Mediation and Law (Moscow), founded by her, is the leading institution in the area of mediation and ADR in Russia. Tsisana Shamlikashvili is founder, publisher and editor-in-chief of the only professional magazine on mediation and ADR in Russian language «Mediation and Law. Intermediation and Conciliation», published since 2006. In 2013 Prof. T.Shamlikashvili was appointed as scientific and academic chair of the newly founded state-run institution – Federal Institute of Mediation whose aim is to promote wider usage of mediation and ADR in Russia. Prof. Shamlikashvili is the Chair of Subcommittee on ADR and mediation in the Russian Association of Lawyers.
In 2012 “The Russian Reporter” magazine named Tsisana Shamlikashvili among the top-100 of the most influential persons in Russia and top-10 lawyers for her contribution to improving Russia’s legal system.
Prof. Shamlikashvili is the author of numerous research articles and several books on mediation, alternative dispute resolution, law, psychology and neurology. Among others are such books as “Mediation as a Method of Out-of-court Dispute Resolution” (2006), “Management of Difficult Decisions in the XXI Century: Secrets of Building Consensus, or How to Make Everybody Content” (2009), “Why Does a Child Find Difficulties in Schooling and How to Help Him” (2010), “Mediation as ADR Method. Focusing on Judges” (2010), “The ABC’s of Mediation” (2011), “Introduction to Dialogics” (2011), “Basics of Mediation as Dispute Resolution Method” (2013) etc.
